The Huns Are Coming

The work of transformation astounds me. From the hatching of tadpoles in the creek behind our home all the way to their losing their tails and crawling out of the water, I love it. Did you know a gillion tadpoles that hatch never become anything else? They just die in a tadpole state. The ones that do make it are real fighters, overcomers. (One time I touched a frog that still had a tail. It was weird. Really weird.)

I’m not sure if it’s just me, or if others enjoy watching development too. I geek out on movies that show lead characters becoming fighters, or gaining self-discipline, or performing the very best they are capable of, overcoming incredible odds to do so. Overcoming is what we were made to do. Before we send warriors out into battle expecting them to advance the kingdom of God, however, they need to be equipped and trained.

One scene in the animated film Mulan shows this little girl riding off into battle, answering her father’s call to service in the Chinese army. Mulan fears the loss of her father more than she fears the battle that awaits. She gets pummeled in the beginning of basic training and is exhausted and defeated, but as the Disney music crescendos, she finds her stride and learns to master the skills and weapons she’s been given, not the least of which is her mind. She saves her commander (and all of China) before being discovered as a woman. I love that stuff.
